Seven Cases of Retropharyngeal Abscess

Seven cases of retropharyngeal abscess in children were treated at the author's clinic during the last 9 years (1970-1978). In the present paper, the clinical findings in these cases and their treatment are discussed. Ages ranged from 4 months to 5 years with four cases under 1 year old. There were 3 males and 4 females. The common symptoms were fever, swelling of the neck and respiratory distress. The soft tissue X-ray film of the neck was helpful in the diagnosis. The common pathogens were 3-streptococcus hemolytics A and staphylococcus aureus. As soon as the diagnosis is established, prompt surgical incision and drainage are indicated since the increasing danger of grave respiratory distress will be expected in due time among these children.
